Change The Spark Plugs In Your Brain

When you change your thought patterns, your worldview will expand. Adding new people, events, places, tastes, and outings will not only inspire joy and creativity but also ignite a sense of adventure and open-mindedness. If you make it a habit to try new things each day, your life will be unrecognizably magnified in a year, filled with exciting experiences and new perspectives.

This practice helps to rewire your brain and break old patterns—and it's fun! Challenge yourself to add one new thing each day or change how you do it. Make it a game and see how many you can do this year! Each new thing you try increases your confidence and motivation to continue your journey of self-discovery. 

Below are some ideas to get you started. It's not about following a set list, but about making these experiences your own. Feel free to add or change them up and make them uniquely yours, adding a personal touch to your journey of self-discovery and growth. 

  • Take a new route to a familiar place. 

  • Try a new healthy food.

  • Do one thing you've been afraid to do. 

  • Call a friend you haven't talked to in a while.

  • Buy a new spice and use it.

  • Put your purse on the opposite shoulder or your wallet in another pocket.

  • Pack yourself a lunch.

  • Write a poem.

  • Give yourself a hand massage.

  • Give yourself a foot massage.

  • Listen to a new album or a genre/artist you're unfamiliar with.

  • Sit on the ground or walk barefoot in the grass. Feel the earth under you.

  • Paint! Get a color-by-number, an inexpensive watercolor set, or paint a rock. 

  • Eat breakfast for dinner.

  • Sleep on the opposite side of the bed.

  • Wear a new color. 

  • Part or style your hair differently.

  • Buy fun, colorful socks.

  • Literally stop and smell the roses.

  • Go hiking, bird watching, or kayaking.

  • Sign up for a fun and creative class. Try yoga, art, ceramics, or photography.

  • Look in the mirror and say three or more nice things to yourself. 

  • Clean out a closet or drawer. 

  • Take an ice bath.

  • Write yourself a love note.

  • Take today off social media.

  • Start a project you've been putting off.

  • Hum a tune. 

  • Choose a theme song for yourself.

  • Write down a secret dream for yourself, close your eyes, and imagine it happening. 

  • Create your own mantra and put it where you'll see it several times daily. "I'm so happy and grateful that…………."

  • Dance. Put on music and move your body!

  • Send a thank you card to someone who's helped you somehow.

  • Write a review for a small business.

  • Purposely help another human today. 

  • Find something kind to say to three or more people today.

Ready to get started?  Print out ideas that resonate with you and put them in a vase, jar, or vessel. Pull a new idea daily and enjoy. The ideas don't have to be complicated, expensive, or time-consuming. They could be as simple as humming a new tune or taking a hike you've never taken.

As you implement these things, be aware of how your mindset shifts. If you take a new route to work, you might meet a new person or see something inspiring. Who knows? Trying a new way is best when you get in a rut with anything. Most importantly, have fun with it and know you're actively upgrading your life, one new idea at a time.
